One after another, sometimes in tandem
Their bodies tense, knees slightly bent
Then they commit, straighten up, uncoil fast
Their arms lift, their wrists flick
Momentarily, their palms make the graceful beaks of swans
Just as the projectiles leave their hands, taking off into the air
Each one seems like another shot at life itself
They soar, reach their peaks, hurtle down inexorably
The hoop is always in the same place, waiting patiently
Some find their mark and pass right through
Others bounce off the rim, hover, take their time
Yet others ricochet away, failed shots maybe, but honest attempts nonetheless
