Pilgrims trek barefoot in the southern Indian coastal city of Calicut or Kozhikode. Their eventual destination is Sabarimala, in the hills some 200 miles south, where they hope to pray at a temple dedicated to the Hindu god Ayyappa.
Their black attire and chantings of “Ayyappa sharanam” (we are in your hands, Ayyappa) make them distinctive. They must also adhere to strict vows of celibacy and other restrictions in the days and weeks leading to the culmination of the annual pilgrimage.
